Some of the DPF systems work on pressure differential pre and post DPF filter. When the pressures start to be higher on the inlet than the outlet, it triggers a regen. What the Original Poster is doing is the best way to keep the DPF clean without excessive regen cycles. WORK IT and the engine keeps is clean with fewer regen cycles.

I often have one set to DPF temp and one set to percentage of maximum power. If I am in a steady pull at 90% to 100% max power the DPF temp will be 900 to 1000 degrees. When it regens the DPF temp will max out at 1120 degrees plus or minus 5 at the end of the regen cycle so it doesn't really heat a lot above working it hard.
